Graduate student funding and award opportunities

Below is a brief list of non-NIH funding opportunities for graduate students in a PhD program. Please check each foundation website for specifics on availability, deadlines, eligibility, and application requirements. As always, discuss funding opportunities with your mentor, committee members, and/or PhD program director for ideas, advice, and administrative assistance.

CWRU Flora Stone Mather Center for Women Research & Professional Development Grants

  • Students, staff, and faculty
  • $5,000
  • Due early February

HSF Scholar Program

  • College or graduate student identifying as Hispanic
  • US citizen or permanent resident
  • $500 - $5,000 USD
  • Due February 15th

American Statistical Association (ASA) Gertrude M. Cox Scholarship

  • For women in graduate school
  • US citizen or permanent resident
  • $1,000 USd
  • Due late February or early March

 

Diana Jacobs Kalman/AFAR Graduate Student Awards in Geroscience

  • Must have completed at least two years of PhD, MD, or DO program
  • Not restricted to US citizens or permanent residents
  • $5,000 USD
  • Due early May

BHW Women in STEM Scholarship

  • Women doctoral students are eligible
  • Not restricted to US citizens or permanent residents
  • $3,000 USD
  • Due April 15th

NAACP The Agnes Jones Jackson Scholarship

  • Graduate students <25 years of age
  • US citizen or permanent resident
  • $2,000 USD
  • Due early spring

American Heart Association Predoctoral Fellowship

  • Not limited to US citizens or permanent residents
  • NIH stipend plus health insurance plus $2,000 USD for project
  • Due in early fall

AAUW American Doctoral Fellowship

  • Senior graduate students (women)
  • US citizen or permanent resident
  • $25,000 USD
  • Due in the fall

 

The Hertz Fellowship

  • For first-year graduate students, or in a gap period preparing to apply to graduate school (PhD only)
  • US citizen or permanent resident
  • Five years of support (up to $250,000 USD)
  • Due October 31st
