The Cleveland Institute for Computational Biology is affiliated with multiple educational programs at Case Western Reserve University.  Listed below are the programs that support trainees mentored by our faculty, or that have courses in which our faculty members teach. 

Alzheimer’s Disease Translational Data Science (ADTDS) Training Program

The new Alzheimer’s Disease Translational Data Science (ADTDS) Training Program cross-trains pre-doctoral students in data science and translational research techniques. The program breaks down silos between clinical and translational research through integrated training across these disciplines and provide trainees with access to several vast omics data sets funded by the NIA to provide new opportunities for AD investigation. Trainees will be selected from a competitive pool of PhD applicants – including MD PhD applicants – from graduate programs across the CWRU School of Medicine. Biomedical & Health Informatics Graduate Program

The Biomedical and Health Informatics (BHI) program includes Certificate, Master's and PhD options all focused on the use of large, complex, and varied data sets in clinical care and biomedical research. This relatively new program was designed in the recognition that there is great need for professionals who can manage, integrate, analyze, and interpret data to make recommendations that accelerate research, improve clinical care, or shape public policy. Graduate Program in Epidemiology and Biostatistics

The Epidemiology and Biostatistics PhD Program enrolls outstanding doctoral students and supports them in developing the knowledge, skills and competencies needed to assume positions of leadership in Genetic Epidemiology and Bioinformatics, Global Health Epidemiology, Health Behavior and Prevention, Health Care Organization, Outcomes, and Policy, and Modern Biostatistics. Through challenging coursework and collaborative research opportunities, students will develop a thorough understanding of how to study the multiple determinants of population health outcomes; the individual and structural factors that may lead to disparities in those outcomes; and the way in which specific policies and interventions influence the nature and impacts of population health determinants.  Learn more...

Medical Scientist Training Program

Case Western Reserve University has offered MD-PhD training since 1956 for students aspiring to careers combining academic medicine and biomedical research. This program was among the first to be awarded NIH funding and carry the designation Medical Scientist Training Program over 30 years ago. The CWRU MSTP provides an outstanding opportunity for students to obtain combined MD-PhD training and launch careers as physician-scientists. Biomedical Sciences Training Program (BSTP)

The Biomedical Sciences Training Program (BSTP) offers a common entry point to most of the biomedical Ph.D. programs at Case Western Reserve University across a wide range of research areas and faculty. Students receive complete tuition support and a stipend throughout their studies.

The BSTP lets students explore a wide range of research areas in the biomedical sciences and then become experts as they pursue their thesis research. Students begin the program with research rotations in the labs of outstanding faculty members (including members of the Institute for Computational Biology) and coursework in cell and molecular biology. In the middle of the first year, students choose their thesis advisors and join one of our 11 PhD programs. Graduate Program in Genetics and Genome Sciences

In addition to its affiliated programs listed above, the Department of Genetics and Genome Sciences accepts students into its Ph.D. program via direct admission. In general, direct admission is reserved for students who already have identified Genetics as their field of study, and who have had considerable exposure to genetic research, either in undergraduate school or the workplace. All full time Ph.D. students receive a competitive stipend, health insurance, and all academic tuition fees are waved.  Learn more...

Systems Biology and Bioinformatics (SYBB)

The Systems Biology and Bioinformatics (SYBB) PhD program is a multidisciplinary program that blends experimental and theoretical investigation in both coursework and thesis research. Many didactic courses adopt a flipped classroom model where student led learning is the norm.  Areas of emphasis include translational bioinformatics, clinical research informatics, molecular and computational biology, and applied health informatics.  The goal is autonomous well-rounded students with a deep appreciation of their chosen area of study combined with skill sets in a wide range of areas relevant to bioinformatics and systems biology.  Learn more...
