CLEARPATH

As an academic collaboration between Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), University Hospitals Health System, the Cleveland Clinic, the Institute for Computational Biology (ICB) uses the combined resources and expertise of these institutions to achieve its mission: to advance knowledge of human biology through computational methods on big and diverse datasets, and promote the translation of this knowledge into better diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, prevention, and delivery.  For this purpose, CLEARPATH (CLEveland Area Research Platform for Advancing Translational Healthcare) will be implemented to facilitate both discovery and research, with tools for cohort discovery, analytics and reporting.

The first step of delivering CLEARPATH is the launch of CLEARPATH Local at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center (UHCMC).

CLEARPATH Local is the result of the collaborative efforts of the Institute for Computational Biology (ICB) and University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center (UHCMC) in mapping patient level data from multiple electronic systems, including the Touchworks Ambulatory EHR and the Sunrise Acute Care EHR, into the OHDSI collaborative (www.ohdsi.org) open source OMOP Common Data Model (CDM).

The initial iteration of the UH OMOP CDM Data Mart will allow for the following types of studies and data explorations (research, clinical, operational):

  • Cohort Identification – clinical trial feasibility (summer 2018)
  • Clinical Characterization – treatment utilization, disease history, quality improvement (summer 2018)
  • Population-level effect estimation – safety surveillance, comparative effectiveness (fall 2018)
  • Patient-level prediction – precision medicine, disease interception (fall/winter 2018)

Access to the tools, including training, will be through the UH IT Research group and the ICB. In preparation for access, we would like to gauge the research community by collecting research questions of interest via a survey at:  https://goo.gl/forms/kuV95xmtki3PkuYv2

This is the first stage of delivering CLEARPATH and we are excited to share the news! We will be expanding the use of CLEARPATH Local beyond UHCMC shortly in order to facilitate discovery across the multiple participating institutions.
